Thanks To Congressional Incompetence, Saturday Mail Delivery Is History | Alternet

The U.S. Postal Service  announced on Wednesday that it will discontinue first class Saturday mail delivery, marking another milestone in the decline of the once-ubiquitous government service. But it isn’t a switch to online mail that’s causing the postal demise — it’s Congress.

The Jobs Report, and Why the Recovery Has Stalled

Robert Reich’s Blog: We are in the most anemic recovery in modern history, yet the government is heading in exactly the wrong direction: raising taxes on the middle class, and cutting spending. We’re following Europe’s sorry example of failed austerity economics.

Media Hate Fest for Venezuela Keeps on Keepin’ On | Common Dreams

How is it that this democratically elected president who hasn’t killed anyone or invaded any countries gets more bad press than Saddam Hussein did (aside from the months immediately preceding invasions of Iraq)? Even when he is fighting for his own life?

The western media reporting has been effective. It has convinced most people outside of Venezuela that the country is run by some kind of dictatorship that has ruined it. Fortunately for Venezuelans, they have access to more information about their country than the foreigners who are relying on one-sided and often inaccurate media. So they keep re-electing the president and the party that has improved their lives – much to the annoyance of the major media and its friends.

Hannity is paid to shoot off his mouth–not back it up:

Fox News host Sean Hannity is so adamant that waterboarding is not torture that he once offered to be waterboarded at a charity event and donate the proceeds to soldiers’ families. Four years later, a yet-to-be-waterboarded Hannity did not take kindly to being called out about it on his own radio show.

Americans shocked to learn that there isn’t actually a Social Security crisis – Salon.com

The 1% want you to think there is a crisis with Social Security, so their paid legislators can “reform” it–funneling the money into the stock market, where it will magically disappear overnight (Then, there will be a crisis).

The deficit fear-mongering succeeded in getting 57 percent of survey respondents to believe that Social Security is a “crisis or significant problem,” until they learned that minor tax increases would make it totally sustainable for 75 years, at which point 74 percent of Americans were like “Oh, really? Then it seems fine, why don’t they ever put it like that on the news.” (That is not an exact quote from the survey.)

This news will presumably enrage and baffle Joe Scarborough, because everyone he knows knows that we must Do Something About Entitlements.

Daily Kos: You want to teach first graders WHAT?

The primary goal of the National Rifle Association’s Eddie Eagle program is not to safeguard children, but to protect the interests of the NRA and the firearms industry by making guns more acceptable to children and youth. The Eddie Eagle program employs strategies similar to those utilized by America’s tobacco industry—from youth “educational” programs that are in fact marketing tools to the use of appealing cartoon characters that aim to put a friendly face on a hazardous product. The hoped-for result is new customers for the industry and new members for the NRA.
