Due to widespread apathy toward what is going on in our nation, this blog will be going on hiatus for the foreseeable future.

I would like to thank all my faithful followers–both of you (you know who you are).

Some parting words of wisdom: Don’t eat the yellow snow, and when you find yourself working on the big plantation–don’t say you weren’t warned.

Macho Men, Social Security and the Chained CPI – Dean Baker

In societies across the globe, men demonstrate their manhood in different ways. There are many wonderful tracts on the topic. However, in the culture of Washington DC, the best way to demonstrate your manhood is to express your willingness to cut Medicare and Social Security. There is no better way to be admitted into the club of the Very Serious People.

Meet the Heartless Jerk Leading a Project to Eliminate Sick Leave | Alternet

The evidence shows that paid sick leave does not hurt businesses. Meanwhile, it keeps workers from having to choose between going to work sick and paying the bills, and it offers public health benefits. So when you hear all these dire predictions from restaurant owners and industry groups, take them for what they are: ideological arguments from low-wage employers who just don’t want to treat their workers any better.

Study Finds 80% of All Antibiotics in US Used for Big-Ag | Common Dreams

Last year, the Food and Drug Administration proposed a set of voluntary “guidelines” designed to nudge the meat industry to curb its antibiotics habit. Ever since, the agency has been mulling whether and how to implement the new program. Meanwhile, the meat industry has been merrily gorging away on antibiotics—and churning out meat rife with antibiotic-resistant pathogens—if the latest data from the FDA itself is any indication. […]

Radioactive Eye Glasses …Silverware…Zippers…Hip Joints… Anyone? | Common Dreams

How would you like radioactive metal from nuclear weapons facilities to be recycled for use in consumer goods like silverware, pots and pans, eye glasses, zippers, kid’s braces, and even pacemakers and artificial hip joints? How the GOP Plans to Subvert, Buy and Obstruct the Vote In 2016 – Richard Long

The Republicans message after November’s shellacking was “If at first you don’t succeed, change the rules of the game so you can win the next time.”  These changes could be devastating in the absence of a candidate like Obama.  However, the Democrats still have a major advantage that’s for the American public to see:  The majority of Americans support the progressive message, and Democrats who ran on the progressive message won big in 2012.

Obama Drone Program Secrecy Reaches Alice-in-Wonderland Extremes

On his first day in the Oval Office, Obama promised to deliver a new era of government openness and ordered that FOIA requests be met quickly and generously.Instead, the administration has thrown up roadblocks at every effort to learn about the targeted killing program. Court filings have been greeted with assertions of executive privilege or national security exemptions. Human rights researchers have been ignored. And at least a dozen formal inquiries from Congress have been met with silence.

They Talk Deficits Instead Of Jobs — It’s Corruption – Dave Johnson

Washington is back to talking about deficits and not about jobs. Didn’t we just have an election? Didn’t we vote to tax the wealthy, provide public services and benefits and provide people with jobs? Isn’t the deficit down 50% from where Bush left it? So why are our own people talking about deficits instead of jobs? Unemployment is destroying people. Do something about that.
